Students learning to read with symbols and picture cues

Today we visited a school for students with severe and profound learning difficulties due to academic, physical and emotional disabilities. The school was in The Bronx and was very large , catering to meet the needs of over 660 disabled students, giving them the chance to do their very best, raise self-esteem and prepare them to lead their lives as independently as possible.

During the afternoon we visited the offices of the Department for Education to learn from the leaders about the ways in which New York caters for the needs of children with special educational needs.

As the DoE offices are in Lower Manhatten we were able to walk from here to the World Trade Centre Memorial Site where pools, waterfalls and a museum reminds us of the events of 11th September 2001 when a terrorist attack brought down the ‘twin towers’. This was a poignant and moving visit.
