Year 4 Home Learning: Week 4

Week Beginning: Monday 18th May 2020

Before we introduce this week’s learning, please click the video below to see a message from our ‘Open the Book’ friends.

English Tasks

This week’s English follows the same structure as the previous three weeks. This week, you will be focusing on persuasive writing, based around the topic of climate change. This has elements that links to our previous learning journey – It’s the Circle of Life. It would be great to see if you can remember some of that learning to include in your writing!

As ever, throughout the week, you will have lessons focusing on reading, grammar and writing. If you would like to tweet your finished piece of writing, we would love to read it. Make sure to tag @barwellacademy in your tweet.

Lesson 1:

https://www.thenational.academy/year-4/english/persuasion-reading-comprehension-fact-retrieval-year-4-wk4-1#slide-3

This first lesson is a reading comprehension task based off of a persuasive rap! The rap is called ‘One small change’ by Cappabue National School. This lesson is great as not only does it allow you to practise your fact retrieval skills, it also gives you a model of what a good piece looks like for when you come to write your own.

Lesson 2:

https://www.thenational.academy/year-4/english/persuasion-reading-comprehension-summary-year-4-wk4-2

This lesson is another reading comprehension lesson. However, it is slightly different as it introduces a skill we haven’t looked at before – summarising. This is a great skill to learn and one that you will use a lot in your learning, and throughout the rest of your life.

Lesson 3:

https://www.thenational.academy/year-4/english/persuasion-identifying-the-features-of-a-text-year-4-wk4-3

This lesson focuses on the features of persuasive writing and what makes a piece of writing persuasive.

Lesson 4:

https://www.thenational.academy/year-4/english/persuasion-spag-focus-imperative-and-modal-verbs-year-4-wk4-4

This grammar lesson introduces something we haven’t looked at before – imperative and modal verbs. They are both really useful when writing persuasively and we bet you’ve used them before without even knowing it!

Lesson 5:

https://www.thenational.academy/year-4/english/persuasion-write-a-persuasive-rap-year-4-wk4-5

This final lesson is the one where you use all of your learning to write your finished piece. If you would like to share it with us, either tweet it to @barwellacademy or send it on the staff email address. It would be great to see your work from this week!

Maths Tasks

This week’s maths builds on the different elements we looked at last week. The learning this week continues to look at decimals and looks at different ways of working with them including looking at money.

Foundation Tasks

This week, we will extend our learning of the three states of matter and begin looking at the water cycle. We will briefly look at the water cycle in lesson 1, before looking at each of the four stages in depth (one per lesson). Finally, we will put all of our learning together to look at the cycle as a whole in more detail.

Lesson 1:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zkgg87h/articles/z3wpp39

Follow the link above to the BBC bite size page all about the water cycle. There is a short video to watch, a bit of information to read and then a short quiz at the end. Once you have completed this, have a go at the following worksheet (below). You simply need to label the four components of the water cycle on the diagram.

Design and Technology Task

Design and Technology- Inspiring Inventions Throughout the world there have been many exciting inventions. Instructions: Through using your imagination and creativity, invent something that would make our world a better place. Maybe you would like to save people time by being able to travel quicker. Designing something to help look after people, animals and the environment. Come up with an invention to cure diseases. A machine that can fix things in a minute.

Imagine– what ideas could you use for your design?

Plan– plan your design.

Create– through notes and illustrations map out exactly how your invention will work. This will help to bring your ideas to life. Improve- what improvements could you make?

Share– ask someone in your family what they think about your invention and write down what they say.
